A consortium including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, BAR Technologies, and the Korean and Liberian registries has initiated a project to study the incorporation of WindWings, a wind-assisted propulsion system, on a new generation of LNG carriers. The Agreement
The memorandum of understanding was signed on Tuesday at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok. It outlines the collaborative framework for the technical feasibility study of a 174,000-cubic-meter LNG carrier design that includes BAR Technologies’ WindWings. The innovative design is expected to provide supplementary propulsion through rigid sails, thus reducing reliance on main engine power.

Technical and Regulatory Assessments
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will lead the basic design and review, aiming to maximize the carrier’s capabilities while meeting environmental standards. BAR Technologies is responsible for delivering the required technical data on the WindWings’ structural needs, operational strategies, and potential fuel savings. Both the Korean Register and the Liberian Registry plan to evaluate the design against current classification and regulatory requirements, with KR considering granting Approval in Principle based on study outcomes.
