Taiwan’s Coast Guard has raised alarms over increasing harassment of shipping activities by the Chinese Coast Guard during recent patrols off Taiwan’s east coast, marking an escalation in maritime tensions. According to the Taiwanese authorities, the latest Chinese patrols involve vessels that are allegedly trying to enforce a fictional jurisdiction over the waters surrounding Taiwan.

Increasing Patrols

Since June, the frequency of Chinese coast guard patrols has increased, which Taiwanese officials interpret as practice for a possible maritime blockade against the island. The Taiwan Coast Guard stated it dispatched its own ships in response to Chinese activities to maintain vigilance and safeguard its interests.

On the recent occasion, Taiwan’s Coast Guard noted the presence of two Chinese vessels engaged in these patrols, reinforcing their claim of sovereignty over the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) extending eastward. China’s assertion of jurisdiction is firmly rejected by Taiwanese officials, who emphasize that their jurisdiction covers the waters in question.

Strategic Concerns

Taipei views the East Coast region as critical due to its role in potential wartime supply routes from allied countries. The encroachment of Chinese vessels is perceived as a direct threat to these routes. Security experts highlight the strategic vulnerability of the Pratas Islands, situated at a considerable distance from Taiwan, underscoring concerns that these islands could be targeted by Chinese military operations.

Video footage released by Chinese state media showed one patrol vessel broadcasting a message offering assistance to any vessels in need, although the recipient of this message remained unidentified. Taiwan’s Coast Guard condemned these actions, labeling them as a clear violation of international law that undermines regional peace and stability.

The Operational Read

The operational landscape in the Taiwan Strait and adjacent regions has become increasingly precarious, with heightened patrols challenging traditional maritime security norms. For shipping operators, the complexities of navigating these waters are exacerbated by the threats of harassment and potential conflict. Key stakeholders must remain vigilant and consider contingency measures, including re-routing and enhanced communication protocols with ally forces. The ongoing situation demands close monitoring, as any escalation could disrupt trade routes and raise insurance premiums, while also impacting supply chain resilience in the region.
