The Iraqi Oil Tankers Co. has commenced a significant operational shift by transporting crude oil beyond the Strait of Hormuz, thereby enhancing its export capabilities. The decision, reported by the state-run Iraqi News Agency on October 3, marks a pivotal change in Iraq’s crude oil transportation strategy. The first shipment, executed with the company’s own very large crude carrier (VLCC), successfully transported 2 million barrels of crude oil, reflecting Iraq’s commitment to diversify its post-loading processes.
Strategic Shift in Operations
According to Ali Qais, the general director of Iraqi Oil Tankers Co., this initiative is focused on moving Iraqi oil sales from traditional methods at Basrah port to direct deliveries beyond the Strait of Hormuz. This realignment is positioned as a response to directives from the Prime Minister and under the supervision of the Minister of Oil. Notably, the new transport strategy facilitates the potential for improved sales conditions and pricing negotiations by avoiding offloading limitations at Basrah.

Future Prospects and Goals
With the initial successful shipment completed, Iraqi Oil Tankers Co. is looking toward scaling operations. Qais emphasized the ongoing directives to engage with relevant authorities to swiftly identify and acquire additional specialized crude oil tankers. The overarching goal is to reinforce Iraq’s oil marketing agency, SOMO, with the ability to exploit better sales opportunities, which are increasingly critical given the volatile nature of global oil markets influenced by geopolitical dynamics.
Behind the Headline
The operational move by Iraqi Oil Tankers Co. signifies a strategic effort to enhance shipping autonomy in the context of ongoing regional tensions. For operators, this shift could mean more opportunities for optimizing routes and pricing strategies, while also managing risks associated with the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint often affected by geopolitical instability. Long-term implications will depend on the successful acquisition and integration of new tankers into Iraq’s fleet, which will further enable the efficient transport of crude oil globally.
