DP World has entered a strategic partnership with Hapag-Lloyd to leverage biofuel bunkering for emissions reductions in its ocean freight operations across the Americas. Through this collaboration, DP World aims to claim approximately 4,700 mtCO2e of well-to-wake emissions reductions, which will be realized via a book-and-claim arrangement over the upcoming four quarters.

Emissions Reduction Strategy

This initiative will enable DP World to book cargo shipments with Hapag-Lloyd while claiming the emissions reductions associated with the use of used cooking oil methyl ester (UCOME) biofuel across Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet. Hapag-Lloyd has implemented biofuel blends in its vessels and allocates the emissions reductions from these practices to its customers through a verified book-and-claim mechanism. This model is an innovative approach allowing customers to benefit from verified emission cuts regardless of whether their cargo is transported on conventionally fueled vessels, provided they pay a premium for the service.

Scope 3 Emissions and Customer Impact

By purchasing the substantial quantity of emissions reductions, DP World plans to pass these benefits onto its customers, contributing to a decrease in Scope 3 emissions across their supply chains. This move underscores the company’s focus on sustainability, especially as environmental considerations increasingly influence logistics and supply chain operations. DP World operates logistics facilities across major cities in both North and South America, including Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, Vancouver, Mexico City, Panama City, Santos, and Santo Domingo, expanding its ability to support a greener supply chain.

Behind the Headline

The collaboration between DP World and Hapag-Lloyd highlights a significant shift in the maritime logistics sector toward more sustainable practices. By utilizing a book-and-claim system, operators can engage in eco-friendly initiatives without the immediate need to retrofit fleets or disrupt operations. This arrangement provides a valuable pathway for organizations looking to offset their environmental impact while maintaining operational efficiency. As the industry continues to face pressure regarding emissions reductions, such partnerships could pave the way for broader adoption of alternative fuels and inspire similar arrangements across the shipping sector.
