In 2026, marine fuel buyers are navigating an unprecedented landscape characterized by skyrocketing bunker prices alongside a worrying decline in fuel quality. Between January and July 2026, VPS issued 29 Bunker Alerts, representing more alerts than those recorded across the entire year of 2024 and approaching the total of 37 alerts issued in 2025.

Of the 29 alerts issued so far in 2026, approximately 72% relate to abrasive issues arising from elevated cat-fines and fuel stability problems. Notably, marine gas oil (MGO) has not accounted for any Bunker Alerts this year. Conversely, high-sulfur fuel oil (HSFO) and very-low-sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO) have been the primary culprits behind these warnings. Recent testing data shows that HSFO is currently recording an off-specification rate of 8.87%, while VLSFO’s off-specification level stands at 9.88%. Comparatively, MGO sits at 9.03%, and ultra-low-sulfur fuel oil (ULSFO) has a concerning off-specification level of 19.58%.
