Novatek’s Arctic LNG 2 project has seen the arrival of the first two topside modules for its long-delayed third production train, TMR-001 and TMR-002, at the Belokamenka construction yard in Russia’s Murmansk region. However, newly acquired satellite images indicate that while these modules were offloaded, overall construction efforts remain largely stagnant.

The Recent Offloading
On July 22, 2026, the heavy-lift vessels Glory Angel and Bright Angel successfully delivered the modules to the Belokamenka yard, marking a key milestone for the Arctic LNG 2 project. Images sourced from Synmax reveal that TMR-002 is now positioned next to the module assembly building, while TMR-001 has been relocated across the yard toward the same site. This movement signifies the first actual progress at Belokamenka since the modules completed their over two-month journey from eastern China, where they were manufactured.
Construction Status
Despite the arrival of the modules, broader construction activity at the facility remains sluggish. Observations from the satellite imagery show that the giant cranes expected to aid in the assembly of the gravity-based structure (GBS3) are still stationary, with no significant signs of ongoing construction or module integration work visible across the yard. The operational inactivity suggests that Novatek is yet to resume full-scale assembly work for Arctic LNG 2.
The first two modules represent only a fraction of what is necessary for Train 3, with at least seven additional modules still in China. Some of these modules are complete, while others remain unfinished, their production delayed due to the suspension of construction that resulted from Western sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Implications for Future Production
Separately, there are complications regarding Arctic LNG 2’s second production train, which has struggled to reach full capacity. Two critical power plant modules meant to expand Train 2’s production capabilities remain stored in China, significantly impacting the operational throughput of the facility. Only two out of four required power generation modules were successfully delivered back in November 2024, leaving the train capable of operating on just one production string—essentially half of its designed capacity.
The conditions surrounding the Arctic LNG 2 project seed uncertainty about its future, as it grapples with the effects of ongoing U.S. sanctions on related infrastructure, specialized LNG carriers, and crucial suppliers.
