Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has signed a significant long-term Time Charter Contract with Deutsche ReGas to deploy a Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) at the Energie-Terminal “Deutsche Ostsee” located in Mukran, Germany. This agreement signifies MOL’s commitment to expanding its influence in the LNG infrastructure sector, ensuring a steady supply of LNG imports for Germany and broader European markets.

Details of the Contract

Under the terms of the contract, MOL will convert an existing LNG carrier into an FSRU at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. in China, with operations scheduled to commence in 2028. This project represents MOL’s first FSRU conversion undertaken solely for the purpose of providing LNG deliveries to established gas networks, positioning the company as a critical player in the LNG supply chain.

The Deutsche Ostsee terminal, the only LNG terminal in Eastern Germany, plays a pivotal role in enhancing the country’s energy security. Ingo Wagner, CEO of Deutsche ReGas, highlighted that restoring the terminal’s capacity supports long-term energy security and additional import flexibility for consumers and industries.

Future Outlook

MOL’s partnership with Deutsche ReGas is set to leverage each company’s strengths, combining MOL’s extensive LNG shipping expertise with Deutsche ReGas’s market presence in Germany. This collaboration aims to create a flexible and reliable LNG import solution, particularly crucial in the context of Europe’s evolving energy landscape.

Behind the Headline

The establishment of this long-term charter for an FSRU at the Deutsche Ostsee terminal indicates a significant shift in LNG supply logistics for Europe. By investing in indigenous infrastructure, MOL is not only expanding its service portfolio but is also contributing to the broader objective of energy diversification. The successful conversion of the LNG carrier into an FSRU will be closely monitored, as it represents MOL’s increasing stake in the downstream LNG value chain. Operators and industry stakeholders should watch for developments in the construction timeline and integration into existing gas networks, as this could impact operational dynamics across the region.
