The global shipping industry is on track to face a significant shortage of qualified personnel, with an estimated need for 113,735 certified officers by 2030 according to a report released by BIMCO and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS). This report highlights the increasing challenges of recruiting and retaining skilled seafarers amid growing fleet demands.

Currently, 2.57 million seafarers are reported to serve on the world’s 85,148 merchant ships. Despite this large workforce, there is already a projected shortage of 39,100 Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) certified officers this year, while 56,890 ratings exceed current needs. To address these discrepancies, the industry needs to recruit an average of 22,747 additional officers and 8,475 ratings each year until 2030.
Growing Demand for Seafarers
The BIMCO-ICS report underscores a significant surge in demand for certified personnel, which has increased by 35% since its last report in 2021. The need for officers has risen by 23.1%, driven by the expansion of the global merchant fleet and the industry’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Ratings have seen an even steeper climb of 46.3%.
