TAIPEI, Sept 24 – Taiwan has significantly upgraded its maritime patrol capacity around the Pratas Islands, a move prompted by heightened Chinese military activity in the region. The Pratas Islands, controlled by Taiwan and located over 400 km from the main island, are perceived as particularly vulnerable to potential Chinese aggression.
The Upgrade Initiative
As part of its defense strategy, Taiwan’s Coast Guard reported enhancements to its overall patrol and enforcement capabilities in the waters surrounding the Pratas Islands. A key element of this initiative is the formal deployment of a newly built 100-tonne-class patrol boat stationed at the islands, which officially occurred following the completion of a wharf project in July. This development aims to significantly enhance nearshore patrolling operations and provide immediate mobile response capabilities.
Alongside this new vessel, Taiwan is now regularly deploying larger patrol ships to assert a stronger presence in the area, thereby demonstrating enhanced multi-layered deterrence and mobile enforcement capabilities. This escalation in patrol activities is a direct response to increasing incursions by Chinese coast guard vessels, underscoring Taipei’s commitment to protecting its territorial claims.

The Pratas Islands are strategically positioned between southern Taiwan and Hong Kong, serving as a critical outpost for Taiwan in the South China Sea. Despite the islands not having a permanent civilian population, they feature an airstrip and rich marine biodiversity, which Taiwan is keen to protect. In line with its enforcement responsibilities, the Coast Guard has actively confiscated nine Chinese fishing boats since the beginning of the year, reassigning them for reef patrol and marine conservation efforts to safeguard the pristine environment of the national park surrounding the islands.
