Venture Global has officially commenced its long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply to customers from the Plaquemines export plant in Louisiana. Shell marked the inaugural shipment under a long-term sales contract, with the Malaga Knutsen LNG tanker departing at 3:26 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026.

The Plaquemines facility completed Phase 1 commissioning, a process that took 22 months following the plant’s initial production of LNG. This achievement highlights Venture Global’s operational capabilities and commitment, as stated by CEO Mike Sabel, who emphasized the dedication of the team in bringing this project to fruition within 53 months.

Market Context

Phase 1 customers, which include major industry players such as Orlen, Sinopec, CNOOC Gas & Power, and EDF, are set to benefit from long-term contracts at significantly discounted pricing. This comes at a time when gas prices at the Dutch Title Transfer Facility and the Japan-Korea Marker have shown near-record highs, creating a favorable competitive advantage for Venture Global as it supplies customers through the Plaquemines facility.

Extensive commissioning periods at its plants have previously enabled Venture Global to capitalize on spot market prices, which have surged recently due to ongoing geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East, impacting global gas supplies. As LNG export demand continues to grow, the operational readiness of the Plaquemines facility can position Venture Global to respond effectively to market fluctuations.

Implications for the LNG Market

The successful launch of commercial operations at the Plaquemines facility strengthens the U.S.’s position as a leading LNG exporter. As the second-largest LNG producer in the country, Venture Global is poised to play a crucial role in global LNG markets, particularly as Europe and Asia grapple with soaring energy prices. The long-term contracts secured by the company may provide market stability for its partners and create opportunities for further expansion within the LNG landscape.

Behind the Headline

This development underscores a critical phase in the U.S. LNG sector, with Venture Global’s Plaquemines facility anticipating further growth as it ramps up production and aligns with the increasing global demand for LNG. The ability to deliver competitively priced LNG amid fluctuating market conditions will be essential for operators and charterers alike. Watch for continued interest in U.S. LNG exports, especially concerning geopolitical events that could influence supply routes and pricing dynamics.
