The CMA CGM Group has announced an agreement to acquire FedEx Supply Chain from FedEx for $1.4 billion. This strategic acquisition is poised to significantly expand CMA CGM’s contract logistics operations in North America and reinforce its presence in the logistics sector. The deal is contingent on regulatory approvals and is expected to close in 2026.

Expansion of Logistics Operations
This acquisition will nearly triple the North American contract logistics operations of CEVA Logistics, CMA CGM’s logistics subsidiary. Once finalized, the combined entity will operate around 150 warehouses throughout the region, elevating CEVA’s footprint to more than 240 locations with a workforce of approximately 20,000 employees. FedEx Supply Chain, which employs nearly 10,000 staff, will integrate into CEVA under this transaction.
Strategic Partnerships and Market Impact
The acquisition also paves the way for new long-term partnerships between CMA CGM and FedEx, particularly in ocean and air cargo transportation. The two companies plan to finalize multi-year commercial agreements, designating CMA CGM as a preferred non-exclusive ocean carrier for FedEx. This collaboration aims to optimize logistics operations, particularly enhancing air cargo capacity for long-haul shipments.
Rodolphe Saadé, CEO of CMA CGM, emphasized the strategic significance of this acquisition, stating it strengthens the integrated supply chain solutions provided to customers. Similarly, FedEx’s Raj Subramaniam noted that the divestiture allows FedEx to focus on higher-value logistics sectors such as healthcare, automotive, and aerospace, ensuring better alignment with their long-term vision.
Future Outlook
The agreement is expected to broaden CMA CGM’s logistics capabilities, contributing to greater operational efficiency and enhanced service offerings. As the implementation of the ocean freight and air cargo agreements rolls out between now and 2028, industry stakeholders will be monitoring the impacts on logistics pricing, capacity utilization, and service delivery across the supply chain.
Behind the Headline
This acquisition underscores CMA CGM’s strategic intent to diversify its operations beyond core maritime transport, focusing on holistic supply chain solutions. Integrating FedEx Supply Chain not only adds substantial warehousing capabilities but also enhances intermodal logistics operations. For shippers, the collaboration may lead to improved freight alternatives and service flexibility as CMA CGM leverages its global shipping network alongside FedEx’s logistics strengths. As the logistics landscape evolves, attention will shift to the effectiveness of this merger in adapting to market demands and maintaining competitive advantages in freight solutions.
