ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) for an innovative concept design of a 15,000 TEU nuclear-powered containership, developed in partnership with the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). This approval signifies a pivotal step forward in the maritime industry’s exploration of advanced nuclear propulsion technology for commercial applications.

The Concept Vessel
The containership concept is powered by a small modular reactor (SMR) featuring a marine molten salt reactor (MSR) design. This initiative aims to assess the technical feasibility of nuclear-powered merchant vessels and establish a safety framework for future designs. ABS conducted a thorough classification review leading to the AIP, which confirms that the proposed concept meets the necessary class requirements at the design stage.
Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the transformative potential of nuclear technology, stating, “Nuclear has the potential to fundamentally alter commercial shipping in vessel design, operating range, and energy economics.” This aligns with ongoing efforts to create a robust technical and safety framework that supports nuclear shipping technology.
Collaboration and Future Developments
The collaboration between ABS, KRISO, and KAERI is part of a broader initiative focused on identifying technical challenges, refining vessel concepts, and integrating class and safety standards for next-generation nuclear-powered ships. Keyyong Hong, President of KRISO, remarked on the importance of developing design technologies suited to marine environments, which is critical for the realization of SMR-powered vessels.
KAERI is committed to enhancing the reactor design and its compatibility with vessel operations while also pursuing essential testing to aid in commercialization efforts. As Jinyoung Cho, Senior Vice President of KAERI, noted, “KAERI will continue to refine the interface between the MSR system and the vessel, enhancing the design to address the unique operating conditions of ships.”
Nuclear Shipping Momentum Continues
This AIP builds upon several years of research by ABS focused on nuclear propulsion systems. Notably, a 2023 study conducted by ABS and Herbert Engineering explored the viability of nuclear-powered containerships and tankers, concluding that such vessels could operate for their service life without refueling, thereby eliminating carbon emissions and enhancing cargo capacity. Earlier this year, another nuclear-powered 15,000 TEU containership concept from HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering also received AIP from ABS.
