ABS and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) have taken significant steps in the advancement of floating data center technology by securing design approvals, marking a notable development in maritime innovation. This initiative coincides with the launch of the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Partnership Center in Washington, D.C., through which stakeholders aim to enhance maritime collaboration.

Design Approvals

The first approved design involves a 50-megawatt (MW) floating data center, for which ABS will conduct a review against relevant class rules and IMO regulations. This builds on the approval in principle (AIP) that was granted to SHI earlier in the year. This foundational review signifies the continued commitment to ensuring compliance with industry standards amidst the growing popularity of offshore data solutions.

Moreover, a separate AIP has been granted for SHI’s 200 MW floating data center concept, which represents a fourfold increase in capacity compared to earlier designs. This substantial enhancement is tailored to meet the demands of hyperscale data center operators, who require more robust infrastructure to manage the surging computational needs driven by technologies such as artificial intelligence.
