On Wednesday, an armed boarding incident was reported involving a merchant vessel off the coast of Yemen, approximately 76 nautical miles south of Balhaf. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued a security warning following the event, which underscores ongoing threats to shipping in the Gulf of Aden.

The Incident

Initial reports from UKMTO indicated that a small craft approached the merchant vessel, leading to an investigation. Subsequently, it was confirmed that four armed individuals boarded the ship, causing damage to the vessel’s bridge and several adjacent compartments. The crew, however, took refuge in the ship’s citadel and were reported safe during the armed incursion. The attackers were noted to have been equipped with an RPG. After the boarding, the small craft remained active in the vicinity, raising further concerns about potential threats to other vessels operating in the area.

Just over two hours later, UK’s UKMTO received a report from the master of a nearby tanker who observed another suspicious approach by a small craft carrying four individuals. This craft closed within about two nautical miles off the tanker’s port quarter before turning away and heading south. The tanker continued its voyage without incident, and its crew also reported being safe.

Broader Context

The Gulf of Aden has been a focal point for maritime security issues, with threats from armed small craft persisting despite recent reductions in regional tensions. These incidents occurred shortly after the Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) reported no confirmed maritime security events in the previous 48 hours, although it cautioned that the threat from hostile small-craft activity remains. Regional stability has had little impact on the continued risk posed by suspicious approaches, particularly as southwest monsoon conditions limit small boat operations further offshore. Authorities are actively investigating both recent incidents, urging vessels to exercise caution as they transit these treacherous waters.

The Operational Read

The persistence of armed boarding incidents in the Gulf of Aden highlights critical vulnerabilities for operators navigating these waters. Companies should reinforce security protocols for their crews, including the implementation of citadel procedures when faced with threats. Given the confirmed presence of small-craft incursions, charterers and ship operators may need to reconsider routes, particularly if the trend of unauthorized approaches continues. Monitoring advisories from UKMTO and swift reporting of suspicious activity will be essential in mitigating risks in this strategically significant maritime corridor.
