Cavotec has announced a significant milestone with the signing of a EUR 5 million order for the delivery of its MoorMaster NxG automated vacuum mooring system at Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPA) in Mumbai. This agreement is noteworthy as it marks the first deployment of automated mooring technology within Indian ports, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and safety.
The contract, signed with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, includes the delivery of the automated mooring system to the GTI terminal, which is operated by APM Terminals. Scheduled for deployment in the fourth quarter of 2027, the MoorMaster NxG will facilitate faster and safer berthing and unberthing processes at one of India’s largest container terminals.
Significance of Automated Mooring
According to Gaurav Dayal, Chairperson of JNPA, the introduction of the automated mooring system is a crucial step towards achieving safer and more efficient port operations. The technology is expected to improve vessel turnaround times significantly, which is vital for optimizing berth productivity and enhancing the overall operational framework of the port.
David Pagels, CEO of Cavotec, highlighted the importance of the Indian market for the company, noting that substantial investments are being made in port modernization and automation across the country. The order underscores the increasing demand for advanced technologies like MoorMaster as Indian ports strive to elevate standards in efficiency and safety.

Market Implications
The deployment of the MoorMaster NxG system aligns with JNPA’s vision of establishing itself as a benchmark smart and sustainable port. In addition to productivity benefits, the automated system is designed to enhance worker safety, targeting a dual advantage of operational excellence and protection for personnel involved in mooring operations.
As ports across India embrace automation, the success of this initial installation may pave the way for further advancements and investments in port infrastructure, signaling a broader trend towards smart port operations nationwide.
Behind the Headline
The introduction of automated mooring technology at Jawaharlal Nehru Port represents a pivotal shift towards the modernization of India’s port operations. By integrating systems that expedite vessel turnaround, ports can enhance their competitive edge in global shipping. For operators and charterers, the expected efficiency gains may lead to reduced laytimes and overall cost savings. Moving forward, industry stakeholders should monitor the ongoing developments in automation, as this could catalyze similar initiatives throughout the region, promoting enhanced operational norms across Indian ports.
