Corvus Energy, a leader in zero-emission marine energy solutions, has announced a landmark contract with British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. (BC Ferries) to provide its advanced Battery Energy Storage Systems (ESS) for four new hybrid-electric ferries. This significant agreement positions BC Ferries at the forefront of vessel electrification within the maritime industry.
Overview of the New Vessels
The new ferries, part of the Summit Class, will be named Summit Arbutus, Summit Cedar, Summit Maple, and Summit Spruce. Each vessel will be equipped with a battery capacity of 10 MWh, contributing to a total of 40 MWh across the fleet. This capacity ranks these ferries among the highest-capacity battery-powered vessels globally. In addition to the primary battery systems, Corvus will supply bases and control systems that provide a design scope of up to 70 MWh for future enhancements.
Technological Advancements and Sustainability Goals
Designed for near-zero emissions, the new ferries will be capable of sailing for up to two hours on battery power alone, paving the way for fully electric operations as shore charging infrastructure becomes available. This innovative Dolphin NxtGen Power system integrates high-performance liquid-cooled cells, offering increased energy density and safety. BC Ferries’ decision to partner with Corvus is supported by the latter’s proven track record with previous vessels in the fleet, enhancing long-term service and support.
BC Ferries’ Strategic Vision
BC Ferries operates one of the busiest ferry systems worldwide, servicing 25 routes to 47 terminals and transporting approximately 9.7 million vehicles and 22.7 million passengers each year. The New Major Vessels (NMV) program represents the company’s largest investment to modernize its fleet, aiming to increase capacity and promote more environmentally responsible operations. Each of the new double-ended ferries will accommodate 360 vehicles and 2,100 passengers, demonstrating BC Ferries’ commitment to enhancing service while prioritizing sustainability.
