According to OPEC’s latest monthly report, the dirty tanker market experienced significant upward momentum in September 2026, with spot freight rates surging across all vessel classes. The findings indicate that trade dislocations and export inefficiencies contributed to limited tanker availability, pushing freight rates to new heights.

The Surge in VLCC Rates

Very large crude carriers (VLCC) recorded substantial gains with average spot freight rates soaring by 98% month-on-month in September, reflecting a remarkable rise of approximately 981% year-on-year. The Middle East-to-East route accounted for a notable month-on-month increase of 88%, reaching an average of WS962. In contrast, rates on the West Africa-to-East route surged by 142% month-on-month, averaging WS421, demonstrating how market factors are causing significant fluctuations.

Suezmax and Aframax Performance

Suezmax freight rates also benefited from the prevailing conditions, with an average month-on-month increase of 53%. When compared to the same month last year, Suezmax rates were reported to be 246% higher. Routes such as West Africa-to-US Gulf Coast (USGC) displayed similar trends, with rates averaging WS373. Concurrently, Aframax vessels saw rates rise by an average of 72% month-on-month, with the Mediterranean routes exhibiting even stronger progress, especially the Cross-Med route, which saw a remarkable increase of 87%.

In the clean tanker sector, rates East of Suez increased by an average of 54% month-on-month, while rates West of Suez experienced a more modest rise of 13%. The divergence between the two markets emphasizes the complexities facing operators in managing freight costs and routing efficiency under the current conditions.

Behind the Headline

The spikes in tanker freight rates signal a complex interplay of factors impacting the shipping industry, particularly the constraints in transportation logistics and changing market demands. Operators are adjusting their strategies, particularly in chartering, to navigate the elevated rates while maintaining supply chain efficiency. A sustained increase in rates may encourage longer voyage planning, which could, in turn, affect global oil supply chains and lead to increased costs for end consumers. Monitoring future price trends and evaluating operational flexibility will be crucial for stakeholders as the year progresses.
