The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) in India has announced the launch of its e-Samudra Portal, designed for the digital issuance of Medical Fitness Certificates to seafarers. This system is set to go live on 25 September 2026, streamlining the process for approved medical practitioners operating within the maritime sector.
Transitioning to Digital
As part of this initiative, all DGMA approved Medical Practitioners will need to register on the new e-Samudra Portal at esamudra.dgshipping.gov.in. The transition from the traditional manual issuance process to the online system is critical, as the manual procedure will cease on 02 October 2026. This change is expected to enhance both the speed and transparency of medical certification for seafarers, which is essential for ensuring the safety and health compliance within the maritime workforce.

Implementation Requirements
Medical practitioners will need to obtain a valid Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) along with a CCA-compliant USB hardware token for signing the Medical Fitness Certificates digitally.
