Hornbeck Offshore Services has entered into a partnership with Deployable Energy to explore the integration of compact nuclear reactors aboard maritime vessels and offshore installations. Announced on Monday, the memorandum of understanding highlights the companies’ commitment to deploying Deployable Energy’s Unity Nuclear Battery across various maritime sectors, including floating data centers and power barges.

Deployable Energy’s Unity Nuclear Battery is a transportable, 1-megawatt-electric microreactor that is designed for integration into vessels, eliminating the need for specialized ship designs. The technology holds the promise of operating for over five years between refuelings and can be combined to meet larger power requirements, offering a significant advantage over conventional marine diesel and grid-powered options.

Strategic Objectives

The collaboration entails establishing a joint working group focused on vessel integration, economics, licensing, and financing, with an initial emphasis on applications within the U.S. market. Hornbeck Offshore’s strategic investment in Deployable Energy signals strong confidence in the viability of nuclear power as a feasible energy solution for maritime operations. The partnership aims for a minimum 20% reduction in total cost of ownership, which could fundamentally alter financial models for maritime operations reliant on fossil fuels.
