The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has officially commissioned its fleet of electric prime movers (e-PMs), marking a significant milestone as Malaysia’s first port to operate electric vehicles for container handling. This initiative aims to drive forward the port’s sustainability efforts while increasing operational efficiency.

Details of the Commissioning

The first 21 e-PMs, provided by Terberg Tractors Malaysia, commenced operations on August 11, 2026. With this deployment, PTP has reinforced its commitment to greener terminal operations, following a procurement agreement with Terberg for a total of 52 e-PMs signed in December 2025. The remaining units are scheduled for delivery in batches through the end of September 2026.

Operational Efficiency and Environmental Impact

PTP’s Chief Executive Officer, Mark Hardiman, highlighted that the integration of e-PMs is not only pivotal for sustainability ambitions but also forms part of a long-term expansion program to elevate the port’s handling capacity to 16.3 million TEUs by 2029. The adoption of electric vehicles is projected to reduce carbon emissions significantly; each e-PM generates approximately 4,000 kgCO2eq monthly compared to 7,600 kgCO2eq for traditional units—a decrease of 48%. This operational efficiency translates into a 57% reduction in monthly operational costs per unit.
