The Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) has announced the establishment of the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) in Patna, Bihar, as a new data capturing center for seafarers. This initiative is aimed at enhancing the efficiency of data processing related to the BSID program, making it easier for local candidates and seafarers to access essential services.
The New Facility
The MMD Patna has been inaugurated as part of the government’s efforts to decentralize maritime administration services. The center will officially commence operations on 12 October 2026, providing support specifically to those residing in Patna and the surrounding regions. This effort underscores the importance of improving accessibility for seafarers in various locales throughout India.

Operational Details
To support seafarers seeking to avail prescribed services, MMD Patna will offer 100 appointment slots per working day, from Monday to Friday, excluding government holidays. This structured approach is designed to ensure that candidates can efficiently schedule their visits while adhering to established booking procedures. Staffing and operational readiness will be overseen by the Officer-in-Charge of MMD Patna, who will be responsible for liaising with MMD Kolkata to ensure compliance with prevailing BSID protocols.
Significance for the Maritime Community
The creation of MMD Patna marks a significant advancement in India’s maritime infrastructure, as it represents the tenth center dedicated to BSID data capturing. With the global maritime industry increasingly relying on streamlined documentation and data management, enhancing local access for seafarers is a crucial development. Effective navigation of the bureaucratic process is key to ensuring that seafarers can maintain their credentials and employment opportunities, particularly in a competitive job market.
Why It Matters
The establishment of a BSID Data Capturing Centre in Patna reflects a commitment to improving maritime services and accessibility for seafarers in India. This strategic initiative is essential for ensuring seafarers can efficiently manage their documentation and fulfill regulatory requirements. Well-structured centers can significantly reduce processing delays, thereby enhancing the operational readiness of the maritime workforce crucial for the industry’s growth. As the demand for qualified seafarers continues to rise, this localized support could facilitate a more robust regional maritime community and encourage further investment in maritime infrastructure.
